Five Surprises About “Everyday” Essential Oils

Young woman is holding her face in astonishment, isolated over white Young Living has compiled a comprehensive collection of essential oils for your everyday activities, which is designed to provide ongoing support for your home, health, and body. The collection has the perfect balance of singles and blends.

The singles include: Frankincense, Lemon, Lavender, Melaleuca Alternifoilia and Peppermint. The blends include: Joy, Purification, PanAway, Theives and Stress Away.

So these oils may be for the “everyday” routine, but there’s nothing mundane about them. Here are five surprises about the oils in this collection.

1. Frankincense is considered the holy anointing oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years.

2. When using Peppermint or Thieves as a supplement, you should dilute one drop into four ounces of liquid. You can put them into a liquid like goat’s milk or rice milk. It’s a surprising but refreshing mix.

3. Stress Away is the first product to contain the stress-relieving combination of lime and vanilla pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. With the addition of copaiba, lavender and other ingredients, the unique blend can help induce relaxation.

4. Melaleuca Alternifolia is also commonly known as tea tree oil.

5. PanAway was created by Gary Young following a severe injury to the ligaments in his leg. The oil blend can be used to soothe the skin after exercise.

Waking the Path to Better Health

10,000 Steps: Walking the Path to Better Health

November 08, 2016

by C_london

YL Steps BlogAccording to the American Heart Association (AHA), being physically active can play a major role in preventing heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 5 killers in the United States. So what’s an easy way for you to get up and improve your health? Give a few extra steps of walking each day a try!

When it comes to walking as exercise, there has been a lot of buzz recently about one magic number: 10,000 steps. In an article on PubMed, a widely respected online database of medical journal articles, some experts have weighed in on why that number is so appealing.

“A value of 10,000 steps/day is gaining popularity with the media and in practice and can be traced to Japanese walking clubs…10,000 steps/day appears to be a reasonable estimate of daily activity for apparently healthy adults, and studies are emerging documenting the health benefits of attaining similar levels.”

Reaching 10,000 steps can be a great part of your weekly fitness goals. The AHA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend getting 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (e.g., brisk walking) every week. Setting a goal to walk 10,000 steps per day can be great motivation, not to mention can give you something easily measurable. So how do you get out of that office chair and reach the 10,000 steps per day goal? Here are some fun and simple ideas that you can easily add to your daily routine:

  • Get a pedometer and log your steps. Studies have shown that wearing a pedometer helped people walk 15 percent more each day.
  • During daylight hours, park at the end of the parking lot when shopping or running errands.
  • Take the stairs rather than elevators and escalators.
  • Bring comfortable shoes to work and go for a 15-minute walk during your lunch break.
  • Research local walking paths online.
  • Invite a friend to go on an early morning walk with you through your neighborhood or a local sports park.
  • Walk around the field or neighborhood during your child’s dance class, soccer practice, etc., instead of sitting and waiting.
  • Get the mail every day, and take a longer route to the mailbox.
  • Walk over to a coworker’s desk to talk to him or her in person instead of sending an email.
  • Early for an appointment? Walk around the block first instead of heading straight to the waiting room.
  • Set an alarm on your computer, phone, etc., to go off every hour to remind you to stand up and walk around for a few minutes.
  • Instead of reading a book on the couch, download it as an audio book and listen while you go for a walk.

How do you work a few extra minutes of walking into your busy schedule?

Less is More: What Makes Thieves Laundry Soap Different

Keeping clothes white

When we formulated Thieves® Laundry Soap, there were two major questions we asked ourselves: what ingredients do we include? And, almost as importantly, what ingredients do we leave out? Like other products in Young Living’s household cleaner lineup, Thieves Laundry Soap’s purpose is to provide our members with a true clean provided by a plant-based formula that is free from harsh additives. What are those additives? Here are three common ingredients that you may not have known about, plus a few tips on naturally.

Optical Brighteners

Many popular laundry detergents contain optical brighteners to give clothes the appearance of being clean and white. By reflecting blue light, optical brighteners give the illusion of fabrics that look whiter than they actually are. These chemicals are designed to absorb into fabrics and remain on clothes after washing.

Thieves Laundry Soap is free from optical brighteners, because you don’t want your clothes to just lookclean—you want them to actually be clean! Our plant-based formula uses pure essential oils and natural cleansing enzymes to wash your clothes and keep them fresh.

If you’re looking to keep your whites bright without adding synthetic chemicals to the wash, try one of these easy alternatives:

  • If you see stains on your clothes, pretreat them before washing.
  • Don’t mix your whites with other colors in the wash. Launder them in an all-white load and use hot water.
  • To whiten small items like socks or napkins, fill a pot with water and a few lemon slices, bring to a boil, turn off the heat, and add linens. Soak for up to an hour, then launder as usual.
  • For an extra brightening boost for whites, hang them dry in the sun for natural bleaching!
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

Sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, is a cleansing agent widely used in products like soaps, shampoos, toothpastes

and laundry detergents. It is used so often because it’s inexpensive and produces lots of foamy lather. Many people are concerned about SLS in their products because it can sometimes cause irritation, itchiness, and may have other unknown side effects.

Thieves Laundry Soap is free from SLS and other sulfates. The cleaning power behind Thieves Laundry Soap comes from pure essential oils and natural enzymes.

Synthetic Perfumes

Some people consider synthetic perfumes to be problematic because companies aren’t required to disclose the exact ingredients in the fragrances. But as the world leader in essential oils, we prefer to work with the refreshing scents of the pure essential oils that set us apart. Bergamot, Jade Lemon, and the essential oils in our Thieves blend provide a refreshing scent without any hidden synthetic fragrances.

Beat the Bedtime Blahs: Seven Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

How you end the day makes all the difference. Your evening routine can either set you up for a cheerful and fulfilling day or one full of frustration and exhaustion. Here are seven steps you can take to create a successful bedtime routine that will give you more restful nights and more productive days.

1. Set an alarm for bedtime.

Try setting an alarm for one hour before you’d like to be settled in bed to remind you that it’s time to step out of your day and start winding down.

2. Drink up!

Since you end up going 6–8 hours without any liquid at all, drinking water throughout the day and before you hit the sack is essential to keeping yourself hydrated. Try adding Lavender Vitality™ essential oil to your water or herbal tea for a calming influence. Aim for an hour before bed, so you aren’t waking up in the middle of the night for a bathroom trip.

3. Give yourself a little face time.

Make sure to give your skin and teeth the TLC they need. Refresh and renew your face with a mild wash such as our ART® Gentle Cleanser. You should also use gentle products on your teeth that are free of synthetic dyes and fluoride such as our Thieves® AromaBright™ Toothpaste and Thieves Fresh Essence Mouthwash. Taking time to establish and follow this important hygiene ritual will help you feel fresh and relaxed before bed and can signal to your brain that it’s time to calm down.

4. Take notes for tomorrow.

Write down a brief game plan for a productive tomorrow. While creating your list, remember to envision the kind of day you’d like to have, how you’d like to feel, and the top priorities you’ve got in your sights. Get it down on paper and you won’t spend hours trying to fall asleep thinking about what your day might look like.

5. Set yourself up for success.

The night before, prepare your outfit, your breakfast and lunch, or complete other tasks you’d usually take care of in the morning. The fewer tasks looming over you, the quicker and happier you will be getting out of bed in the morning.

6. Ditch the tech and read a book.

The light from electronic screens can trick your mind and body into thinking it’s still light out. Try leaving technology out of your bedroom to help you shift into to a calm, relaxed, and clear state.

7. Add essential oils to your routine.

Try diffusing Lavender, Stress Away™, or your favorite blend of essential oils with comforting aromas as you prepare for bed. Rubbing a couple drops between your palms and brushing them over your pillow can also boost the relaxing aromas and can make jumping into a cloud of pillows and blankets feel extra luxurious.

Once you’ve worked out a routine that helps you sleep well on a regular basis, create a ritual of those steps so your body and mind is prepared for a good sleep and a successful day ahead.
